The Abstract Orchestra (Madvillainy set) + Children Of Zeus + DJ Gilla (First Word Records) + Soul Rebels DJs
Friday 27th October - The Wardrobe Leeds - 8.30pm-late
After a great sold-out "Tribute To Dilla" show at "Soul Rebels Sessions" at The Wardrobe Leeds, the UK's only hip-hop big band The Abstract Orchestra return to the clubnight/venue in October for another big night. This time the 17 piece ensemble will be featuring their own interpretation of the iconic groundbreaking hip-hop album "Madvillainy", the collaboration between two of hip-hop's greatest mavericks, producer Madlib and MC/rapper MF Doom, released in 2004. Great sampled based hip-hop music now scored for a 10 piece brass section and live drums/keys/bass plus vocalists and rappers. Totally unique in UK hip-hop today.
This year has been a huge step-up for The Abstract Orchestra. For 6 year's, Leeds' best kept musical secret but this year they went national and even international with their debut album release of the Dilla set on the UK"s premier analogue soul/funk/jazz label ATA Records (like the band, based in Leeds). Signing to Diplomats Of Sound agency also saw the orchestra playing their first ever full UK tour to promote the Dilla tribute set, including sold out shows in London at Jazz Cafe and in Manchester at Band On The Wall. At last, the rest of the country can hear and see this allstar band made up of musicians who play with/have played with the likes of The Haggis Horns, Submotion Orchestra, Corinne Bailey Rae, The New Mastersounds, Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Jamiroquai and Martha Reeves.
Support comes from new UK streetsoul/hip-hop stars Children Of Zeus - singer Tyler Daley and rapper Konny Kon - who have released great singles "Still Standing" and "I Can't Wait" in the last 12 months for London label First Word Records. With superb production and beats, sweet soul vocals and on-point raps, the duo are making waves right across the board, from the hip-hop scene to the r'n'b/neo-soul scene. If you were at the sold-out Yussef Kamaal show in Leeds last April, you will have witnessed their impromptu guest slot on three tracks with the fusion jazz quartet. An education in the art of freestyle MCing and soul vocals. Catch them now in a small and intimate club before they blow up huge and move to the big venues.
Soul Rebels DJs Lubi and Chris will be supplying all the right beats and tunes, from neo-soul to jazz, hip-hop to funk, 90s r'n'b to classic boogie. Special guest DJ from London for this show is none other than First Word Records boss Aly Gillani aka DJ Gilla, one-time Leeds man and former resident DJ and co-promoter at the much missed New Bohemia clubnight. He's now doing great things in London including running one of the UK's coolest record labels, hosting his "Excursions" radio show and DJing at the huge monthly South London Soul Train sessions in Peckham.
